Establishing sacred space through ritual is actually establishing sacred time, in which we can journey to non-ordinary reality. It is done to facilitate the gathering of imagery through trance, visualization, or internal dialog, potentially assisted by divination. Its use as a fortress from which commands can be issued to the spirits is aberrant, therefore, because it is counter to the original view of the spirits as potential allies and helpers (not demons), and the original purpose to dialog with the spirits to obtain information (not issue commands).
In the same way, with words or signs of power, they were originally meant to form the basis of the communication between the ritual worker and the spirit realm. They originally served, as we will see in later posts, as invocations (names or titles) and societal gestures (greetings or acknowledgements). They were also, potentially, the basis of a system of divination in use by the ritual worker to initiate dialog.
